I knew the renovation was going too well. They came to install the floor. I live in an old house. We knew that the floor was not level and concrete had been poured to level it out to prep it for the porcelain tiles. Well the contractor noticed a crack in the concrete indicating that there is movement in the floor. Therefore he said that the new floor could crack eventually and he cannot guarantee that it won't. Fixing the problem would involve tearing out my furnace and going into the basement ceiling to secure the sagging beam. Can you spell THOUSANDS of extra dollars???? Two alternatives: 1. add extra support by putting another layer of underlay and concrete (again no guarantee, but improved chances) 2. go with a laminate or vinyl floor.
I had my heart set on the tiles. But sanity prevailed. I now have to go searching for a new floor. Hope I can find something really nice that looks like tile. Wish me luck.
