I had to share this with y'all. Superbowl Sunday I went outside because I heard yappy barking. Clearly not a sound that comes from my 80 pound rottweilor. I looked around the yard for another dog. There is a wild dog pack that has run through our yard in the past. No animals in sight, but my dog was sniffing at her outdoor bed.
DH recently sewed a luxurious outdoor bed out of old foam pieces and topped it with an old dog bed that he brought into the marriage (though the dog had since past). It sits about 8 inches off the cold ground (in the shelter of the carport) and is bigger than my daughter's crib mattress. He is a very devoted dog owner and on his 3rd rescued rottweilor (the previous 2 have since gone to doggie heaven). Which is a post all in itself - combat vets and the dogs that love them (and us).
I heard a growling coming from underneath the moving blanket that serves as her "comforter"(because 6 inches of foam with a 2 inch plush topper isn't enough, she needs a blanket to snuggle up in). I was somewhat afraid that there might be something small but rabid under there, and although I didn't think raccoons barked, I quickly brought my dog back inside, and tried to calm everybody down.
An hour later I poked the blanket gently with the broom. It moved slowly. No hissing. I tried to lift up the blanket and peek, but the thing had wrapped itself up tightly like a little package and I couldn't make much progress using a broom handle. If it was a wild critter, I couldn't just pull the blanket off for fear of being bitten, and if it was tame (as I was beginning to suspect), I didn't want it to get scared and run away.
An hour later I had to go to church, and my dog was so (understandably) excited I couldn't leave her in the house for fear of her somehow misbehaving. She's a good dog, but I needed her outside on her bed. So I scooped the moving blanket up and placed it in the kennel. Whatever it was clearly did not mind being picked up. It seemed it sat up for me. Still, I chose not to disturb it until after church.
When we got back, DH was back early from work making a bonfire to celebrate the Superbowl. I asked him if he'd looked in the kennel. He had no idea what I was talking about. We all went over together and found a brown chiuhuahua in there. What a cutie! Lord only knows how she got here. You can imagine the glee from my 3 year old. Mommy, she's "SO ADORABLE". The rottie is being a very good sport. We've had plenty of opportunity to discourage her prey drive with the squirrels she's always chasing. So I'm sure she won't eat her.
We all want to keep her, and I've called around to the shelters and no missing reports have shown up. Daughter still knows we are looking for her owners and we might have to give her back, but it really feels like somebody dropped her off for us. She has a vet appointment this afternoon. I think she's fully grown at about 10-15 pounds. Its looking like we're a 2 dog family now!
