Originally , I posted this to another post. Then I thought I would begin a new post. It was a bit too long and off topic!
My dh's PTSD C&P came and went withpout much event. His first hearing he was awarded 50%. That was ok at the time because it was the counseling he was after. There has been some really good coun seling and some counseling that is not worth a darn. We never had to do a stressor letter. Dh had been awarded a Silver Star so that as submitted.
It really blows my mind when they say our men may not be experencing the memories just solely because they refuse to talk about it. Why would they discuss it? The Vietnam Vet was totally forgotten put out to pasture to get by the best way they could. Many of them turned to self medicating with drugs and alcohol while going from one marraige to the next. In my humble opioion they did the best they could with what lack of help they had. So then they have spent a great deal of their lifeteime truying to forget what nightmares will not let them forget. Lo and behold know they are asked to remember them to a agency that left them stranded. Go Figure!
My dh was first rated 20% SC with AO derivative diabetes in 1999. He practically stepped of the plane with diabetes etes with no family history on either side of his family tree. He has always been insulin dependant. Things rocked along fairly well with a few sporadic problems but nothing that could not get back into check and under control. That was until 2007. My dh spent a week in ICU with a blood sugar of over 1000. It could have and may have been much higher but that was as high as the hopsitals machine was detect. Prior to this dh had severeal bouts with renal failure. Three to be precise. Problems were setting in. After the hospilization I spent days and nights back and forth between the local hospital and the Oklhoma City VA with blood sugars all over the place. There was a time when I felt the car could actually drive us to Oklahoma City on auto pilot. It must because I was dogged tired. After all was said and done at his next C&P hearing dh was awarded a mere 40% SC diabetes. My dh has more hopital stays than carter has liver pills. Under the guidelines he should have been no less than at the very least 60%.
Life was tough! There were times where I felt I could not go on. My advice is to never give up. It was not about the money it was about survial. Our bills had to be paid and it took good ole greenback dollors to pay them. The money did not vindicate what happened to dh it gave us monetary ability to survive on. It takes money to travel back and forth to the Oklahoma City Medical Hospital. Yes, we do recieve travel pay.........but there is a lot of expense before the car leaves the driveway the travel pay never gets close to. There is not enough money in this world that will ever compensate me when I am sitting in a waiting room wondering is tis the time I will go home alone! The day is coming and no matter how long it is it is way too soon.
Finally , after VA math with many SC connected ratings we made it to 80%. If not for two of the most wonderful Service Officier in this whole wide world we would have never been awarded the 100%P&T. Markers should have never had to be used for something he rightfully deserved. My dh recieved it because he was a recipitent of the Silver Star. He is considered a highly decorated Veteran with the Oak Leaf Cluster on the Silver Star, Purple Heart, and numerous other awards, It should not matter if he had a Silver Star or not....he was injured and it was Service Connected. What rips my heart apart is the individual whom may not have recieved one of the awards they consider to be highly decorated but suffered Service Connected Injuries that affect them to this day fighting the uphill battle that seems to be as winless as the conflict they participated in in the 60's and early 70's. as warriors for our Country.
My advice is to Appeal...Appeal...Appeal.....FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!
Never give up......they were given up on before. Let our vioces speak for them.
